We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated Product Development Engineer to be part of our Consumables Team and strengthen our R&D Department. You will play a key role in our success by contributing to the development of the next generation of Sophion consumables.
The role
As a Product Development Engineer in the Consumables team, you will be part of a small, dedicated group of specialists in materials, biology, and integration. You, along with the rest of the team, will be responsible for developing the next generation of consumables for both current and future Sophion products. Your work will span the entire development cycle, from conceptualization and technology maturation, to prototyping and implementation in operations.
To excel in this role, you should have extensive knowledge and experience in microengineering, materials, process design and implementation, as well as strong motivation and self-drive to work in the lab, tackling challenges on various applications. Interdisciplinary collaboration is key, so excellent communication and networking skills—along with professional proficiency in English—are required. A structured approach to problem-solving is also necessary to drive the projects forward.

Main Responsibilities and Tasks:
- Contribute to the design and development of both current and next-generation Sophion consumables, from initial concept to market launch.
- Identify and select materials and methods necessary for consumables optimization, development, and production.
- Plan, execute and interpret experiments aimed at testing and optimizing Sophion consumables and products.
- Collaborate with project and product managers to translate market and customer needs into clear product specifications and prioritize execution.
- Contribute to the development, optimization, and automation of the consumables assembly processes to enable cost-effective, large-scale production.
- Implement the necessary process control measures to ensure a high, uniform product quality.
- Provide technical support and guidance to the team and the rest of the organization on other Sophion products.
- Work closely with scientists, engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure that new consumable designs and processes align with the requirements of specific applications.
- Document and communicate results, design concepts, project progress, and potential challenges through reports and presentations.
Profile and key Qualifications:
- M.Sc. in engineering or equivalent, preferably within material science, chemistry, or physics, and preferably with a Ph.D.
- Proven work experience as engineer or similar role within complex technical development or life science field. Ideally, experience with the development of single-use consumables for drug discovery.
- Experience with evaluating materials for use in new products or in the improvement of existing ones.
- Knowledge and understanding of microfabrication techniques and microsystems integration.
- Experience with mechanic design and modeling is an advantage.
- Experience with manufacturing and process control is preferred.
- Proficiency in using laboratory equipment, such as microscopes and spectrometers.
- Excellent project and time management skills and experience working in dynamic and technically complex projects involving numerous internal and external stakeholders.
- Data-driven with proficiency in data analysis.
- Detail-oriented, enthusiastic, self-driven, and with strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and rectify issues that may arise during the design, development, and testing of consumables and processes.
- High attention to detail and precision are required to work with complex consumables, and to ensure the accuracy and quality of the final product.
- General biology knowledge, including ion channel physiology and the drug discovery process, is a plus.
- Able to work well in a team and independently in a dynamic environment, and able to handle several projects in parallel while keeping an overview.
- Able to communicate fluently in English, both speaking and writing.
