Are you an engineer with expertise in organ-on-chip (OOC) microfabrication techniques and are you passionate about advancing the underrepresented filed of Women’s Health? Do you want to take part in a multi-disciplinary team dedicated to transforming cutting-edge research into a new validated platform for drug safety?
Come join us at the BioInnovation Institute (BII) in Nørrebro as an experienced Engineer in the Model-MI project within our company-creation program, Bio Studio. Model-MI is a newly started project aiming to develop a placenta-on-chip model as a new tool for testing drug safety and toxicity for any drug taken by women of childbearing age.
Your Opportunity to Join BII’s Bio Studio Program!
Established by the Novo Nordisk Foundation in 2018, BII promotes collaborative, interdisciplinary, research-based innovation in the Life Sciences, Quantum Science, and Deep Tech and helps build viable start-up companies to ensure that such innovations become widely available for the benefit of people and society.
This is where Bio Studio comes into the picture, which is one of BII’s programs supporting the creation of viable start-ups. Bio Studio is our company-creation program that aims to build life science start-ups based on world-class research. Bio Studio projects are three years, grant-funded projects sourced from leading researchers worldwide. Selected for their scientific novelty, commercial potential, and societal and/or health impact, each project forms a dedicated team based at BII and led by an Entrepreneur in Residence (EiR), which is expected to become the core of the future start-up company. Teams have access to laboratory facilities, office space, and BII’s network of industry experts, investors, and advisors to support scientific development, IP, commercialization, and fundraising.
A career at BII allows you to work with world-leading entrepreneurial scientists in a position where you will have a substantial chance to impact your job and the opportunity to develop your bio entrepreneurial skills.
About Model-MI And The Role
As part of BII’s Bio Studio program we have launched an exciting new project focused on developing an OOC human model of the maternal-fetal interface (complex
in vitro model of the placenta) to become a validated preclinical safety tool in drug development. The project aims to address the general lack of data on fetal drug safety which so far limits treatment options for any condition during pregnancy or for women of child-bearing age. This innovative project has been initiated by a world-leading Principal Investigator (PI) from EMBL and represents a unique opportunity to support innovation in the underrepresented field of Women's Health. By joining our team, you will play an instrumental role in bringing this promising technology forward.
The Engineer we are looking for will be responsible for developing new placenta-chip models, leading the microfabrication and prototyping R&D, and transferring fabrication expertise to the team members of Model-MI. This role will include generating a mid- and high-throughput model suitable for multiplexed assays and robotic handling. Our new team member will also perform computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations and analyses using established deep-learning pipelines.
Your Ownership Of Our Mutual Journey Will Be
- Lead the transition from a PDMS model to suitable bio-compatible materials (ensuring compatibility with readouts and scaling)
- Develop modular mid- to high-throughput models
- Work with team members to ensure robustness and biocompatibility of new designs
- Rapidly iterate and prototype devices (3D printing)
- Define quality control metrics and SOPs for in-house fabrication/testing
- Translate prototypes to scalable designs and work with external manufacturing companies
- Follow GMP/GLP guidelines and pharma-industry standards
- Set up pilot production lines
- Perform analysis/statistics using commercial and established software (CFD, Python code)
- Lead R&D and feedback to team members on state-of-art in OOC technologies
- Assist in technical presentations where required
- Contribute to intellectual property and commercialization efforts.
Your daily work and well-being will be shared directly with the lead scientist and the Entrepreneur in Residence, but as a small community with close ties and bright minds, you should be prepared for many cross-functional and inspiring discussions that can help shape your work at BII.
Your Professional & Personal Qualifications
We are looking for a proactive and solution-focused professional who possess strong analytical skills and who thrive on tackling complex challenges with creativity and adaptability.
Other than these skills and experiences, we imagine that you also have:
- PhD in Bioengineering, Engineering, Physics or Industrial Design
- 5+ years of experience engineering & design, with experience in CAD, computational modelling (FEA, CFD, Python, MATLAB or similar)
- Extensive experience in developing organ-on-chip technologies
- Expert in hydrogels and cell culture plastics is an asset
- Extensive hands-on experience with microfluidics, microfabrication techniques, and 3D printing (working with PDMS, hydrogel scaffolds, and other advanced materials)
- Familiar with scaled manufacturing techniques
- Proficient in statistical analyses
- Previous experience in advanced imaging techniques is a plus
- Proven track record in developing models and tech transfer
- Strong written and oral communication skills in English.
You are proactive and solution-oriented and you are known as a true team player driven by the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a multidisciplinary team and the success of the placenta-on-a-chip model project.
