The role
Our instruments are complex and designed through collaboration between teams of specialists across disciplines of mechanics, electronics, software, microfluidics, and biology. Within R&D, you will work in a highly diverse and international scientific environment and in close collaboration with dedicated experts within their field.
As our hardware automation engineer, you will be responsible for the hardware automation which could include automatic calibration of positions, automation packages for unattended operation, liquid exchange and dispensing – Areas where you will need to use your technical background, rigorous structure and hands-on approach to ensure a fast and high quality product development. When the technology is ready, you will also facilitate a smooth transfer to production through training and documentation and thereby enable a rapid development cycle of our new and innovative products.
To excel in this role, you should have a natural technical curiosity with strong analytical skills and an exceptional good problem-solver. Collaboration across the organization is vital, so strong collaboration skills in a highly international environment are essential.
You will work in Ballerup, and report to the Manager of R&D Hardware.

Key areas of responsibility
As part of the Hardware Group, you will work closely with our mechanical and electronic engineers and together with our software and biology and production teams to ensure robust and efficient automation solutions for our customers.
As our new Automation Engineer, you will be responsible for:
- Design, develop, and maintain automation solutions within our product portfolio.
- Supporting integration between hardware, control systems, and software.
- Continuous improvement of our automated products.
- Collaborating closely with your colleagues across our various specialized teams.
Key qualifications
You possess strong communication and collaboration skills and are comfortable working in an English speaking highly international environment. Your integrity is high, and you have a strong focus on quality, reliability, and structured problem-solving. The most important skills to us are your ability to implement reliable automation solutions, troubleshoot complex systems, and work effectively across disciplines.
- Master’s degree or similar in Automation Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Mechatronics.
- +3 years experience in similar automation or hardware-related engineering position
- Experience with hardware–software integration and system-level debugging
- Proven experience working with industrial automation systems, PLCs, and motion control.
- Ideally experience from life science, pharma or analytical equipment industry
- Experience with laboratory equipment is an advantage.
- Experience with mechanical design using Autodesk Inventor is an advantage.
- Fluent in English and Danish, both written and oral

Travel is required
Sophion have offices in Denmark, USA, Japan and China, and customers all over the world: Thus, this is an international role: You should expect to travel up to 10 days a year.
