Astrolight is on a mission to bridge the connectivity gap between space and Earth with advanced laser communication systems. Founded in 2019, the company aims to provide end-to-end connectivity solutions by building complete and self-contained hardware for ground and space operational domains: LEO-to-Earth links, ship-to-ship communication, and ground-based systems in secure defense and commercial applications.
Astrolight is looking for a Laser Engineer to support the development, assembly, and integration of free-space optical communication systems. You will focus on hands-on assembly, alignment, testing, and optimization of our laser-based terminals and ground stations. This role directly contributes to the deployment of Astrolight’s next-generation communication products in space.
Responsibilities
You will be a key part of the optics engineering team working on laser communication systems including the ATLAS space terminal, HERMES optical ground station, and POLARIS naval terminal. In this position you will:
- Assemble and integrate complex laser communication systems: adaptive optics free-space subassemblies, fiber-based components and control electronics
- Perform high-precision optical alignment, beam adjustment and calibration procedures
- Conduct laboratory testing, troubleshooting and performance verification of optical communication hardware
- Prepare assembly procedures, test reports, and technical documentation
- Collaborate closely with mechanical, electronics, and software teams to ensure complete system integration
- Support system-level environmental, thermal and functional testing
Requirements
- Degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Photonics, or a related field
- 3+ years of hands-on experience with laser system assembly, optical alignment and/or integration
- Experience working with fiber-based laser systems, free-space optics, and optical benches
- Good understanding of laser beam propagation and alignment principles
- Experience with optical measurement equipment: beam profilers, power meters, alignment tools
- Familiarity with cleanroom procedures and working in controlled environments
Nice to have
- Ability to use optical spectrum analyzers, beam profilers and oscilloscopes
- Basic knowledge of optical system behavior in harsh environments (thermal, vibration and vacuum)
- Experience with free-space optical communication or LiDAR systems
- Experience with SWIR optics and fiber-coupled laser systems
- Knowledge of aerospace or defense standards (ECSS, MIL-STD)
What We Offer
- Stock options package
- Flexible hours, partial remote work
- Small, experienced team with fast design iterations
