As a Mechanical Design Engineer at Clair Scientific, you'll be responsible for designing, developing, and validating the mechanical systems that form the backbone of our novel automated microscopy instruments. Your work will ensure our equipment operates with the precision and reliability that scientists demand; from sub-micron positioning systems to thermal management solutions to the sleek, functional enclosures that house everything. We're looking for someone who understands that mechanical design isn't just about making parts fit together, but about creating elegant systems that perform flawlessly under real-world conditions. This is your chance to directly impact how scientists conduct research, and help define the mechanical engineering direction at Clair Scientific.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and develop mechanical assemblies for automated microscopes
- Create detailed technical drawings, specifications, and manufacturing documentation
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate mechanical, electrical, and software systems
- Oversee prototyping, testing, and validation of mechanical designs
- Work with suppliers and manufacturers to ensure design for manufacturing
- Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical issues in existing products
- Drive mechanical design standards and best practices across products
- Design instrument enclosures, covers, and user-facing mechanical interfaces
- Ensure industrial design aesthetics align with functional requirements
Qualifications:
- 3+ years of experience in mechanical design engineering
- Proficiency with CAD software (Onshape or similar preferred)
- Strong understanding of materials, tolerancing, and relevant manufacturing processes (e.g. machining, sheet metal fabrication, injection-molding, etc.)
- Experience taking designs from concept through production
- Knowledge of precision mechanics and motion control systems
- Strong analytical and creative problem-solving capabilities
Nice to have:
- Experience with optical or scientific instrument design
- Familiarity with automation and robotics systems
