Are you passionate about the sustainability agenda? Do you want to be part of an international project? Do you thrive with responsibility and development? If you can recognize these statements, you might want to consider joining our team at Biomason! We are looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our international project based in Ikast, Denmark.
About Biomason and the project:
Biomason is decarbonizing the built environment through planet-friendly, high-performance biocement. As a global leader in bio-concrete, we are tackling carbon emissions at their source by rethinking how cement is made. Instead of relying on traditional carbon-intensive processes, we harness the natural power of microorganisms to grow our biocement, delivering a high-quality material with a significantly lower environmental footprint.
The position:
As Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will play a hands-on leadership role in establishing, stabilizing, and improving the mechanical performance of our first-of-a-kind tile production facility in Ikast. This role is part of our evolving operations leadership team and will work closely with Operations, Maintenance, Quality, and Process Engineering to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient plant performance. You will first help translate innovative process science into robust day-to-day manufacturing at the first of a kind facility, while driving structured problem-solving, equipment reliability work, plant expansion support, and continuous improvement across the facility.
You will then support the scaling of this process to our first commercial facility from engineering design and equipment selection through commissioning, start-up, and operations.
Responsibilities also include:
Mechanical Operations & Equipment Reliability
- Provide day-to-day supervisory and execution support for mechanical systems and production equipment across the tile manufacturing process.
- Lead troubleshooting and root cause analysis for mechanical failures, downtime events, and recurring equipment issues.
- Help establish preventive and predictive maintenance routines for critical equipment, utilities, and production assets.
- Support commissioning, start-up, and scale-up activities in a FOAK environment, helping to translate development work into reliable plant operation.
Production Support & Continuous Improvement
- Partner with Operations and Quality teams to improve equipment performance, uptime, process stability, and product consistency.
- Drive structured continuous improvement initiatives using data, operator feedback, and practical floor-based observations.
- Promote and embed 5S, good manufacturing practices, and disciplined ways of working throughout the production area.
- Contribute to waste reduction, line efficiency, and standardization efforts as production scales.
Capital Project Engineering for Commercial Facility Scale-Up
- With the Direct of Projects and an EPC firm, act as Biomason’s lead Mechanical Engineer supporting the development of FEL3 and Detailed Engineering design packages including participation in and review of Block Flow Diagrams (BFDs), Heat and Material Balances (HMBs), Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), General Arrangements (GAs), Basis of Design (BoD) documents, equipment specification and selection, and HAZOP.
- Support the commissioning and startup of the commercial facility through:
- Participation in Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) at vendor sites as needed and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) at the facility.
- Provide on-site technical leadership during the "boots-on-the-ground" commissioning phase, troubleshooting mechanical, thermal, or other deviations in real-time.
- Bridge the gap between EPC firms and internal operations to ensure a seamless handover.
Technical Leadership & Team Development
- Support the development of SOPs, technical work instructions, equipment care standards, and troubleshooting guides.
- Coordinate with vendors, contractors, and internal teams on equipment modifications, installation work, and performance improvements.
- Serve as a visible, hands-on member of the leadership team and help build a strong safety and performance culture on site.
What we are looking for:
- Minimum 10 years of experience in mechanical engineering, maintenance engineering, plant leadership, or a similar industrial role.
- Strong experience in industrial process or manufacturing environments, ideally with automated or semi-automated production equipment.
- Experience supporting production start-ups, greenfield projects, FOAK environments, or first-time industrial implementation is strongly preferred.
Technical Expertise
- Strong understanding of industrial mechanical systems, equipment reliability, maintenance strategies, and structured troubleshooting.
- Experience with 5S, good manufacturing practices, and continuous improvement in a production setting.
- Ability to read technical drawings, manuals, equipment layouts, P&IDs, and supplier documentation.
- Familiarity with Six Sigma, Lean manufacturing principles, root cause analysis methodologies, and continuous improvement practices is an advantage.
Management & Interpersonal Skills
- Hands-on leadership style with the ability to balance technical depth and operational urgency.
- High attention to detail, with the ability to manage complex, detail-oriented projects and ensure disciplined follow-up through execution.
- Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to work across functions and cultures.
- Structured, practical, and data-informed approach to problem-solving and decision-making.
Strategic Mindset
- Ability to help build stable and scalable ways of working in a growing manufacturing environment.
- Focus on safety, reliability, efficiency, and sustainable long-term plant performance.
On a personal level, we are looking for someone who is proactive, practical, and motivated by solving real industrial challenges. You should thrive in a hands-on environment where systems and routines are still being built, and where your leadership can help shape the culture of a new facility. Fluency in English is essential. Additionally, your motivation should stem from contributing to an organization that prioritizes sustainability and innovation within the cement industry.
What we offer:
You will be part of a team consisting of colleagues based in Ikast, Denmark, however you will be part of a much larger overall team based in the US. We offer a competitive salary and comparable benefits. You will be part of an innovative team with different cultural backgrounds.
You will come to experience that the culture is a mixture of entrepreneurship, creativity, and future focused strategies. This position offers a unique opportunity to make a difference and build a sustainable future. We are hoping you want to join us on this journey.
