Overview:
We are seeking a highly motivated and organized individual to join our dynamic team in a hybrid Research Associate (RA) / Lab Manager (Contractor) position. The contract is expected to last 6 months. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge mRNA-based therapeutics while also playing a key role in the smooth operation of our lab facilities. You will be part of a rapidly growing startup working on novel programmable mRNA technologies to target diseases at the cellular level.
Key Responsibilities:
Research Associate Responsibilities (80%):
- Assist in cloning of high-content plasmid libraries and NGS sample prep for high-throughput screens, ensuring timely and efficient workflows.
- Design and perform molecular biology experiments, including plasmid cloning and sample preparation for RNA sequencing (RNAseq, RNA amplicon sequencing).
- Normalize plasmids and prepare new stocks and aliquots of common plasmids for ongoing experiments.
- Perform nucleic acid extraction, RT-qPCR, dPCR, and other molecular characterization assays.
- Collaborate with team members to analyze data and present findings in group meetings.
- Maintain comprehensive, organized lab notebooks and experiment documentation.
Lab Management Responsibilities (20%):
- Oversee the scheduling and maintenance of laboratory equipment, ensuring proper calibration and functionality.
- Ensure laboratory equipment is in optimal condition (e.g., MiSeq sequencer, Attune flow cytometer).
- Manage inventory and ordering of laboratory consumables, ensuring stocks are adequately replenished.
- Prepare media for tissue culture (TC) and oversee other common laboratory preparations.
- Perform routine autoclaving of water and other necessary materials.
- Manage incoming shipments, including picking up packages from the loading dock, un-boxing, and organizing the lab space.
- Maintain accurate records of lab activities, inventory, and equipment status.
Qualifications:
- B.S. or M.S. in Biology, Bioengineering, Genetics, or related field.
- 5+ years of laboratory experience (academic or industry), with a strong foundation in molecular biology techniques.
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills, with an ability to maintain efficient lab operations and manage competing priorities.
- Familiarity with maintaining lab equipment, inventory systems, and ordering procedures.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to present scientific data clearly and concisely.
- Positive, proactive, and collaborative team player with the ability to work independently.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with flow-cytometry highly preferred
- Experience in cloning, plasmid preparation, and sample prep for RNAseq.
- Experience with high-content pooled libraries
- Experience with mammalian tissue culture, including BSL2 practices, transfection, and reporter assays.
- Prior experience with lab management, inventory control, and maintaining lab safety protocols.
- Familiarity with lentiviral production or mRNA-based production systems.
