Research Scientist – Microbiome Bioinformatics (Full Time)
About Us
Cmbio delivers world-class services in microbial genomics, metagenomics, transcriptomics, metatranscriptomics, and marker gene analysis. Our expertise spans the most complex and challenging projects, including human microbiomes, environmental and agricultural ecosystems, and engineered microbiomes in industrial and medical contexts.
At the Cmbio Aalborg site, we work at the forefront of long-read sequencing (ONT) while leveraging short-read technologies where appropriate. Our mission is to empower scientists, engineers, and clinicians by providing cutting-edge sample-to-answer workflows. This position is for the Cmbio Aalborg site (Denmark), formerly known as DNASense, where our integrated offices and laboratory space provide a highly flexible, modern environment for scientific innovation and collaboration.
The Role
You will play a key role on our bioinformatics team, contributing across the project lifecycle—from sample strategy and data generation to advanced analysis and reporting. This is a full-time, on-site position in Aalborg (Denmark), where you will collaborate with a diverse and highly experienced group of colleagues. Our projects are intellectually demanding and constantly evolving, so we seek someone excited by complexity and scientific exploration.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute bioinformatic analyses of microbial communities using long- and short-read sequencing data and in-house bioinformatic pipelines.
- Contribute to and develop workflows for metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, genomics, and marker gene profiling.
- Support molecular biology workflows, including DNA/RNA extraction and sequencing library prep.
- Collaborate closely with team members across disciplines (wet lab, data science, microbiology).
- Communicate findings internally and externally via presentations, reports, or publications.
About You
We are looking for a candidate with a solid foundation in microbial bioinformatics and molecular biology — someone who can bridge sequencing data and biological insights.
Essential Qualifications:
- Advanced degree (PhD or MSc) in microbiology, molecular biology, bioinformatics, or related field.
- Hands-on experience with ONT and/or short-read sequencing workflows.
- Strong bioinformatics skills in microbial community analysis (e.g. genome/metagenome assembly, gene annotation, taxonomic profiling, expression analysis).
- Skilled in scripting languages (e.g. Python, R, bash).
- Strong communicator and collaborative team member.
Nice to Have:
- Familiarity with non-human microbiomes (e.g. environmental, agricultural, engineered ecosystems).
- Practical lab experience in DNA/RNA extraction and NGS library preparation.
- Experience developing or optimizing reproducible pipelines (Snakemake, Nextflow, etc.).
- Interest in engaging with customers and translating research into solutions.
What We Offer
- A chance to work on cutting-edge and meaningful projects in a field of global importance.
- A modern, dynamic, and interdisciplinary environment with highly skilled colleagues.
- Opportunities for continued learning, autonomy, and long-term career development.
Location
This position is based in the co-located office and lab facility in Aalborg, Denmark – part of the Novi Science Park community. Partly remote work is acceptable, but in-person work in the office on a weekly basis is a must, and more so especially in the beginning and during training.
How to Apply
If you are excited about contributing to cutting-edge microbiome research and working in a highly collaborative scientific environment, we would love to hear from you.
Please submit your CV and cover letter via the application link. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis, and we aim to fill the position as soon as possible.
We look forward to receiving your application.
