How to Evaluate Communication Skills When AI Writes Perfect CVs?

For Employers By Søren Spanner Bach Published on January 31

❓ How to evaluate communication skills (at scale) when AI writes the perfect CVs and cover letters?

Hiring has become more complex, with large language models (LLMs) polishing applications and writing what they know you want to hear.

But here’s the catch: CVs and cover letters can be utterly misleading when it comes to communication skills.

That’s why automated workflows incorporating one-way video interviews are one of the tools in my "recruitment toolbox".

One-way interviews offer candidates an opportunity to answer key questions (whenever they have time), allowing you to:

✔️ See beyond the CV text to the person behind the application.

✔️ Save hours of scheduling and initial screening time.

✔️ Evaluate communication skills at scale (no need for scheduling meetings).

✔️ Give all applicants a fair chance to showcase themselves.

🧠 When to use one-way interviews for early candidate screening:

Especially relevant for roles requiring strong communication (e.g. sales, leadership, project management, or client-facing positions).

Can also be used for other roles where communication is less critical, but where you would like to get a feel for the candidate - as a supplement to the CV etc.

NOTE: One-way interviews are not replacing the traditional online/F2F interviews, but shall be seen as a supplement for the early screening.
